So you are about to pick the perfect domain name for your website? I bet you can visualize it – your name all over the place like Google or something. Well, since you are reading this, you are off to a good start.
I will give you 6 easy steps to follow:
So the domain is free or at a great price in aftermarket? Okey that’s good. But what about its history? Perhaps it’s a bad idea having a former pornsite or something as your family business name. Google that name, and don’t miss the ”images” tab…
2. Keep it short and memorable.
I bet Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a great place. Altough, having Llanfair as a short form is an even greater idea. Get it?
3. Do not use numbers or hyphens.
Was it 8-ball.com or eightball.com? Unless you’re in for all of them – stick to all letter no hyphens. Altough, having the 8ball.com might have som advantages in branding and marketing… but that’s another story.
4. Use keywords.
No, Google wont reward you for it. But humans will. Is the searchword included in the domain we’re more likely to click it. E.g. going to New York? Would you click newyorkguide.com or something like neyogu.com?
Was it Minder, mindr, or mndr? Unless youre having the budget to a great marketing campaign, keep it simple and use the normal spelling. The second spelling is very 2011 when people panicked discovering all good .coms were taken… Just saying.
6. Choose domain extension wisely.
Is the .com taken? Of course it is, but lighten up, there are approx. 1 500 extensions out there. Are you in tech, use .tech. Only market in one country , use its Top level domain (e.g. .se for Sweden).
